Trim carpentry is the running material that finishes a room: base, casing, crown, aprons, stools and shoe. Fine carpentry is the built pieces — a stair, a bookcase, a mantel. The two use the same hands here, but they are priced and scheduled differently, and knowing which one your project needs changes the estimate.
Nobody inspects framing after drywall goes up. Everyone looks at a miter. Open joints at crown returns, casings that stand proud of the jamb, base that waves along the floor line — these are what a buyer notices on a walkthrough, and they are the difference between a room that reads finished and one that reads nearly finished.
Houses here move with the soil beneath them, and older stock has had decades to do it. In a 1930s bungalow you will find door openings out of plumb, floors visibly out of level, and corners well off ninety degrees. Trim cut to theoretical angles will not close in a house like that. Our carpenters scribe to the condition in front of them and cut to the angle the wall actually is, which is slower and the only thing that works.
Baseboard and shoe — scribed to floors that are rarely flat
Door and window casing — including stools and aprons
Crown and cornice — coped rather than mitered at inside corners
Wall treatments — picture rail, chair rail, board and batten
Profile matching — new runs milled to match original trim

Pre-fabricated trim works for simple projects, but custom trim delivers better fit, deeper profiles, and a match to existing millwork. We guide you through wood types, MDF, finishes, and styles based on durability, maintenance, eco-friendly options, and budget. Custom profiles are especially valuable during historic restoration in neighborhoods such as Hyde Park and Clarksville. See finished trim work in our project gallery or read more on our blog.
General contractors and luxury home builders rely on our team for high-end interior trim and whole-house door installation through our builder services program. We also finish every custom home we build.
We serve Austin, Hyde Park, Zilker, Tarrytown, Rosedale, Brentwood, Allandale, Clarksville, Northwest Hills, Travis Heights, Lakeway, and nearby neighborhoods. Call (512) 337-6774, explore all remodeling services, or find your area on our locations page.
Paint-grade trim allows filler and caulk to close a tight joint. Stain-grade allows neither, because everything shows through the finish. Stain-grade takes longer, wastes more material selecting for grain and color, and has to be priced that way. We say which you are getting before the first board is cut.
Trim is priced on linear footage, profile complexity, ceiling height and finish. A simple ranch profile in a single-story house is straightforward work. Ten-foot ceilings, a built-up cornice in three pieces, or stain-grade walnut in a custom home are not, and the estimate should say which of those you are buying rather than quoting a flat rate per room.
Trim goes in after drywall, priming and flooring, and before final paint. Bringing it forward to save a week costs more later in damage and touch-ups. On our own jobs, the crew that framed the space is still on site when trim starts, which removes the usual handoff between contractor and trim sub.
