This surprises most people building here. Texas has no statewide general contractor license and no state agency that issues one — the Texas Residential Construction Commission was abolished in 2010 and nothing replaced it. Anyone can call themselves a builder in this state. That makes your own diligence the only real screen, so ask for references you can call, addresses you can drive past, and proof of insurance you can verify.
Three trades do hold state credentials, and these are worth checking on any project: plumbers through the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, electricians through TDLR under Occupations Code Chapter 1305, and HVAC contractors through TDLR under Chapter 1302. Ask who is holding those licenses on your build. In Austin, permitted work also runs through the city's AB+C portal, which leaves a record you can look up.
Since January 2022, residential construction contracts in Texas must carry a written lien-law disclosure under Texas Property Code § 53.255. If a proposed contract does not include one, that tells you something about how the rest of the paperwork will be handled.
Materials are provided at cost. On a custom home that is the largest single line and the easiest place for margin to hide, so removing it changes the conversation: when we recommend a window package or a floor, the recommendation is not tied to what we make on it.
Carpentry is self-performed rather than subcontracted, which means framing, trim and fine carpentry are done by people who answer to us. Fewer handoffs mean fewer of the gaps where schedule and detail usually go missing.
Much of Austin sits on expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, so foundation design here is not a formality copied from a plan set. A geotechnical report drives the slab or pier design, and skipping it is how houses in this city end up with cracked drywall and doors that stop latching.
Design, budget and site work are settled before material hits the site. We would rather spend an extra month on drawings than discover a structural conflict after the slab is poured, and Austin's permitting timeline rewards being ready when you file.
A custom build is the cheapest moment to get the outdoor living spaces right, because structure, drainage and utility runs are already open. Adding a covered porch later means opening finished work to do what could have been done once.

If you love your location but need more space, a home addition or whole home remodel may deliver better value. If your current home has major structural limits or you own a vacant lot, a custom home offers complete design freedom. Founder Rob Howard, Ph.D., will help you compare options during your on-site consultation.
1. Initial consultation: we explore your ideas, preferences, lot, and budget to establish design concepts.
2. Design and planning: we transform your vision into detailed architectural plans, select materials, and provide a final estimate with an at-cost materials list.
3. Construction: our in-house crew builds your home with transparent scheduling and clear communication.
4. Final review: a thorough walkthrough confirms every detail meets our quality standards.
Most of our work is performed by our in-house crew, so framers, cabinet makers, and trim carpenters collaborate on one team. That means better quality control, fewer delays, and lower cost. Browse finished homes in our project gallery or explore all remodeling services.
We build in Austin, Tarrytown, Rollingwood, Brentwood, Clarksville, Lakeway, Northwest Hills, Highland Hills, Allandale, Hyde Park, Rosedale, Zilker, Travis Heights, and nearby communities. Call (512) 337-6774, visit our locations page, or book your consultation.
